How does an air flow meter work?
An air flow meter is used in some cars to measure the quantity of air going to the engine. The electronic control unit then calculates how much fuel is needed to inject into the intake manifold. Air flow meters are used to measure the flow of air. Air flow meters may measure the volume of the air, the speed of the air, or the mass of the air, depending on the type. Most typically, however, air flow meters are used to infer mass flow after taking various flow measurements such as absolute pressure, differential pressure, viscosity and temperature. The air flow meter then performs calculations and comes up with an estimate of the air’s mass flow.
Air flow meters can measure many different types of gases including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, helium, hydrogen, natural gas and carbon dioxide. Variations in air flow meters
Air flow meter is a generic term. There are 2 general types used in engines and several different designs. The most common type is a hot wire MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. It estimates the mass of air entering the engine by determining its ability to draw heat off electrically heated wire(s). The older version called a flapper MAF sensor, estimated airflow by how much it deflected a airfoil in the airstream. Another method used was MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor. It measured the pressure drop across a restriction to calculate airflow.
