Mazda has used a number of different marques in the Japan market, including Autozam, Eunos cars, and Anfini, although they have been phased out. This diversification stressed the product development groups at Mazda past their limits. Instead of having a half-dozen variations on any given platform, they were asked to work on dozens of different models. And consumers were confused as well by the explosion of similar new models.
Mazda launched a luxury car marque in Europe called Xedos. It was a companion for the Japan-market Eunos marque and the (never launched) North American Amati. This diversification plan fizzled, and
Xedos lasted until 2000 with just two vehicles. These were sold at existing Mazda dealerships. The Xedos models were: 1993-1999
Xedos 6 and 1994-2000
Xedos 9.
In Europe, the equivalent Xedos marque was launched, lasting just a few years. The initial Amati products would have been the Amati 500 (which became the Mazda Millenia), and the Amati 1000 (a new rear wheel drive V12 successor to the
Mazda 929 . This never happened, leaving the near-luxury Millenia to the Mazda brand.
The
Eunos marque, which was the luxury, upscale brand compared to Autozam and Efini, was names for the ancient Greek "eu" meaning "good" and "nos", an abbreviation of "numbers" in English. The Marque was launched in Japan with the Eunos 500 in January, 1992 and many of the vehicles created are exported to other markets with other names.
the MX-5 was designed with a traditional FR (front-engine, rear-wheel-drive) layout and four-wheel independent double wishbone suspension. It has a longitudinally-mounted four cylinder engine coupled to a manual transmission; (an automatic transmission is optionally available).
The body of the
MX 5 (a.k.a. Miata [Seagull] in North America,
Roadster in Japan) is a conventional, but very light, unibody shell. It incorporates a unique trusswork called the Powerplant Frame (PPF) which connects the engine to the differential, minimizing flex and creating a tight, responsive feel. Many MX-5s feature limited slip differentials and antilock brakes. Traction control is an option available on some models.
