The
Volvo V50 is the station wagon / estate version of the
Volvo S40 small family car.
It is based on the Volvo P1 platform shared with the
Mazda 3, and the new European
Ford Focus.
Highlights of the V50's interior design include soft "theatre" lighting of various sections, and a translucent "iced aqua" center stack. In safety, the V50 features "Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture". The top-of-the line V50 is the T5 AWD. This model features four-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5-litre petrol engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. Its valve train has four valves per cylinder and is a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing. The engine provides 220 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The T5 AWD and T5 both provide increased power, in fact, but the base trim 2.4i makes up in a smoother ride what it lacks in power because of the wheels and suspension that come standard with the 2.4i (more power usually means stiffer suspension.)
The
Volvo C70 was available with both low-pressure and high-pressure, 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines and manual and automatic transmissions. Although visually based on the
Volvo 850, it was actually engineered by Tom Walkinshaw Racing and was a breakthrough design for Peter Horbury. Since the
Volvo 780 coupe went out of production, Volvo lacked a true competitor to the
Saab 900/9-3 coupe/convertible. A series of special edition models were made with unique two-tone premium leather interior. Other optional equipment made standard in this special edition include Dolby Surround Sound stereo with 3-disc integrated changer unit (via a cartridge) and 12 Dynaudio speakers.
The
Volvo C70 Coupe model has a smoother roof line than the convertible due to the ribs necessary in a soft top. The second generation C70 remedies this by using a three-piece retractable hard top. The C70 is a heavy car for its size due to numerous safety features. The car performs best at high speeds, overtaking traffic with power bursts from its turbocharged engine. The manual transmission makes the most of the I5 engine, but is rare in North America.
The Volvo
Volvo S70 and
Volvo V70 is a compact executive car / mid-size luxury car. The S70 was the sedan and the V70 the station wagon; they both represented mainly new styling and had revised suspensions. The S70 was replaced with the
Volvo S60, which is in fact a little smaller in size. The exterior has new headlamps and a reshaped hood as well as a rounder front end. The new interior included dual front and side airbags. New electronic brake modulation helped optimize performance in normal stops. Volvo's traction-control system now included throttle as well as brake intervention. A starter interlock was added to models with manual gearbox, while automatic transmissions gained "adaptive" shift logic. Engine immobilizer became standard. Dashboard airbags got new two-stage sensors that matched deployment force to road speed and belt use; they also automatically unlocked doors after the bags triggered. In 2000, the SE model replaced the standard model, and only SE's and GLT SE's were sold. After this, the S70 was replaced by the Volvo S60, as the
Volvo S80 had been introduced in 1999.
