The
Vivio replaced the Subaru Rex. It was available in 3 and 5-door versions. The "Vivio Bistro" was a variation with a retro theme, with Mini-esque front and rear fascias, matching upholstery and modifications to the dashboard. The Bistro series was popular and Japan would see a string of modern retro-styled cars. The Vivio was available with a variety of supercharged 4-cylinder engines.
The
Subaru Justy is a Subaru subcompact hatchback automobile in production since 1984. The Justy family consists of four versions. In 1994, a rebadged Suzuki Swift with 4WD fitted was sold as the Justy in most European countries; and in 2004, it was replaced by a rebadged Suzuki Ignis (the Subaru G3X Justy).
Initially, the Justy was equipped with a 1.0 or 1.2 litre three-cylinder engine and either a manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission with either front wheel drive or on-demand four wheel drive. The CVT technology (a pushbelt system) was employed because with a conventional automatic transmission, performance would have been unacceptable, due to the small 3-cylinder engine. The manual transmission version of the Justy was known for excellent mechanical reliability and fuel economy. It was reported to give 50 miles per gallon as a new car. However, it was small and noisy as one would expect of a compact hatchback. The five-speed manual transmission worked reliably, but was far from smooth to operate because its synchronizers were not very good.

Forester is equipped with an all-wheel drive drivetrain.
The Subaru Forester XTIn, a turbocharged Forester, was released, however the same model had been available since the late 1990s elsewhere in the world. The XT model features a 2.5 L turbocharged engine mated with the same Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger used in the Subaru Impreza WRX. In fact, the engine in the 2004 to 2005 Forester XT is identical to the American market Subaru Impreza WRX STi except for using the smaller TD04 turbocharger from the WRX, a smaller intercooler, different exhaust system, and different engine management programming. The 2003 Forester features weight-saving refinements such as an aluminum hood, perforated rails, and a hydro-formed front frame. The Forester was Car and Driver magazine's Best Small SUV for 2004, 2005 and 2006. In 2005, Subaru launched an STI variant of the Forester, the Forester STI. It shared the same engine as the 2005
Subaru Impreza WRX STI, but generating a bit less than the WRX STI. In 2006, the turbocharged engine (powering the Forester XT) was awarded International Engine of the Year. This engine is also used in the Subaru Impreza WRX, as well as the re-badged Saab 9-2X.
